The SA national sprint championships start today! The racing serves as the national trial as well which means I'll be focusing purely on my Olympic distance, the 200m. Looking at the draws last night these SA's look to be the most competitive ever. There are 5 heats for the mens K1 200m which means that if you want to make the final you have to end 1st or 2nd in your semi to qualify, serious pressure stuff. My preparation has gone really well and managed to clock a PB on the course yesterday of 35.67 sec which meant a new top speed of 22.3km/h and an average 20.17 km/h. Its really awesome to be able to get all this data straight after my race, it makes a massive difference to know exactly where improvements can be made. I'm really looking forward to both my K1 and K2 events. Shaun and I have made a whole lot of changes in our K2 this year and it seems to be going super fast. Sitting out for the 1000m today has really made me hungry to race tomorrow and hopefully I'll get those results I'm looking for.
The 1000m K1 was raced 5min ago, it seemed to be a really really tough one. 1st went to the on form Nick Stubbs, Len Jenkins came in second and 3rd was my K2 partner Shaun Rubenstein. This is the first time in like 6 years that Shaun has been beaten over the 1000m and I know he wouldn't have gone done easy. So well done to Stubbs.
If you gonna be checking out results from the weekend, follow Coach Melck/Captain Awesome's winning tally he's got three athlete's Shaun, Nick Stubbs and myself and he's hoping to win all the K1 events with a 1st and 2nd in the 200 and a full podium in the 500 as well as the k2 200m and 500m and he also has the outside chance of getting the k2 1000m with the 2 Big Nicks racing.
